Lyrical dancing is also evolving and changing as the dancers and choreographers learn and develop their styles. It is less physically demanding than jazz dance or ballet with the concentration being more on individual style than exact dance moves and this makes it accessible for people of all ages and dance abilities. It is a great dance style to learn kids because they can easily relate to that emotional content. It has been made famous by productions such as those of Cirque du Soleil and the emotional content of it appeals to many people. Lyrical dance combines both of these older styles of dance and some experience with them can help you learn this style – although this isn’t compulsory to take lyrical dance lessons. It is a popular dance to learn for adults but also for kids who learn a range of associated skills from it. These dancers have grace and balance but also the fluid movements that lyrical dance has inherited. There are lots of quick turns and daring leaps with plenty of fancy moves involved. Jazz dance came alongside jazz music and is a fun and energetic dance style. But children as young as two can start to learn it. It is a dance often done by trained professionals at the highest levels with top orchestras and using famous composer’s music. It became a type of concert dance using music and a choreographer to become the classic dance we associate today with productions such as the Nutcracker. So if a style of dance can be both Ballet and Hip Hop what exactly is it Lyrical is a quality of dance. It can be more contemporary or even more hip hop. Differences from ballet and jazzīallet has been around a lot longer than lyrical dancing and started back in the 15th century. Lyrical dance can be more ballet or more jazz. More recently, music from Africa has become a part of the dance style, with the sounds from places such as Soweto being used. Minimalist music such as the creations of Philip Glass has been used by lyrical dancers as well as the work of Steve Reich. These include pop, rock and blues as well as hip-hop and music from around the world. Lots of different types of music are used for lyrical dance. It is also a very precise dance with the dancer’s movements portraying the emotion and story of the song. Choreographers use the lyrics from the song to inspire the dance and the result is a style that focuses on strong emotion as well as a more individual approach than some dance styles.

SA Academy studios offer the space to learn and practice routines in small or larger groups. Furthermore, a number of our younger teams have also won bids to compete at the Summit in Florida. Our senior team have competed at the World Championships in Florida since 2013 and have placed in the top 10 each time. Our competitive teams are highly successful, winning many National and Grand Champion titles. Every individual style of jazz dance to this day has roots traceable to one of these two distinct. Prior to the 1950s, jazz dance was a style that originated from African American dance and in the 1950s modern jazz dance emerged, with roots in Caribbean traditional dance. Similarly, we also have competitive Jazz teams and Lyrical teams for all ages and abilities. The term jazz now incorporates a broad range of dance styles. The groups perform the routine in our annual Winter Showcase. From June-December our development groups learn both a jazz and a lyrical routine. In particular, this is an exam syllabus created to develop plyometric agility, strength, fitness, flexibility and strong jazz technique in dancers. In light of their chosen style of dance, our development groups train for their IDT (International Dance Technique) exams from January-June. Both styles have ballet technique at their core. Jazz is very fast paced and hard hitting, whilst Lyrical is a softer balletic style.
